Lisa (committee chair), members of the education committee and Superintendent Dr. Jewett reviewed three policies at the committee's Jan. 28 meeting: a mandated spectator code of conduct, a revised electronic-communication and recording-device policy, and a recommended policy on generative artificial intelligence.
The spectator policy (Policy 9163) aims to set uniform expectations for behavior at interscholastic events and guidance for handling unruly spectators; the district's director of athletics is working with counterparts for regional consistency. On electronic-device rules (Policy 5516), the committee discussed aligning policy language with current procedures in the student handbook and liability questions if a device is stolen in a classroom'designated area. The committee also reviewed Policy 2365, which would outline components of a district AI plan; Dr. Jewett and Director of Technology Anthony Maluso said Mr. Maluso is coordinating with other districts and may provide training and recommended resources for board members. Committee members noted a planned joint AI professional-development session to be hosted at Watchung Hills for staff from neighboring districts to defray costs and broaden participation.
