Watchung Hills announces staff award and student academic, arts recognitions

A district staff member and multiple students received recognition at the Watchung Hills Regional High School District meeting.
A staff member announced that Lisa Martins, the district's administrative assistant in the athletics department, has been named the 2025 North 2 Administrative Assistant of the Year by the District Athletic Administrators of New Jersey; Martins will be honored in March at the DAA‑NJ convention in Atlantic City. The district speaker said, “she is extremely, extremely well deserving of this recognition,” and said the board plans to recognize her at a future meeting after the convention.
Student achievements announced by the student representative included: Kenneth Hester, Megan Lee and Selena Zahn named candidates in the 2025 United States Presidential Scholars Program; five Watchung Hills students advanced to National Merit Scholarship finalists—Colin Bellfield, Ria Patel, Melody Chen, Selena Zahn and Megan Lee; and sophomore Jenna Ibrahim was placed on the long list in the Pulitzer Center’s Letters for Global Change contest (top ~4% of roughly 1,200 entries).
Arts and extracurricular recognitions included Liu Chen and Emily Wang performing at the Concert for Peace with Violins of Hope, and The Folio art and literary magazine winning the National Council of Teachers of English Award of Superior in its contest (a distinction above last year’s award of excellence). The Folio advisor was identified as Maggie Violet Birnberg.
Other school notes: Miss Lott Jones hosted Professor Samuel Wang of Princeton University and the Gerrymandering Project for student presentations in AP Human Geography and AP Government and Politics on Jan. 23. The district also announced it will host the District 15 wrestling tournament on Feb. 22; tickets will be sold online and at the door.
The district said it will share further details and formally recognize Martins at a future board meeting after the March ceremony.
