Board renews memorandum of understanding with Riverside International Friendship Gardens friends group

The Board of Park Commissioners on May 15 approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department and the Riverside International Friendship Gardens friends group that outlines shared responsibilities for the gardens in Riverside Park.
Sammie Meyer explained the MOU is standard for the department’s friends groups and that it defines the volunteers’ responsibilities and the department’s expectations. She said this is the group’s second year under an MOU and that no substantive changes were made from the 2024 version aside from grammatical updates.
Commissioner Olsen asked about reported vandalism; Meyer said instances were linked to a prior encampment near the north end of the La Crosse River and that staff have worked with the garden volunteers and the police department when vandalism occurred. “There are cameras in the garden as well. So we do do our best to remediate that,” Meyer said.
The motion to approve was made by Commissioner Olsen, seconded by Commissioner Young, and the board approved the MOU unanimously. The MOU will return annually for approval as long as the friends group remains active.
