Board members debate health committee frequency after question about DOE DEI letter

A board member used new business to ask whether the district had received a U.S. Department of Education letter requiring removal of diversity, equity and inclusion materials within 14 days and whether that letter would be posted publicly.

The question — read aloud by a board member during new business — said in part that the U.S. Department of Education "has 14 days to remove all DEI or they will lose funding." Chief School Administrator Doctor Angelo replied succinctly: "As with all, we will be compliant."

Following that exchange, trustees held an extended discussion about the health and wellness committee’s purpose and meeting cadence. One trustee emphasized the board’s oversight role and said the board is "here just to make sure the schools are run. We are not here to run them," describing the committee as an advisory vehicle that meets "when there's a need." Other trustees asked for more frequent health-and-wellness committee meetings, arguing the topic remains important for student supports and programming and sought clarity on how topics such as mental health, substance use, nutrition and related interventions would be handled.

Trustees and administrators agreed that operational questions about personnel, student welfare and daily practice should be routed to the superintendent and building administrators; the board’s role is oversight, not day-to-day management. Several members suggested that board members who want more information or to raise topics in committee should contact the superintendent or the committee chair in advance so items can be placed on a committee agenda.

No formal change to committee schedules or structure was adopted during the meeting; a board member asked to be added to the health and wellness committee and the superintendent said committee meetings occur as needs arise or at the discretion of the administration.
