Superintendent seeks approval of next year’s calendar; district planning AI guidance for academic integrity

Superintendent Doctor Angelo asked the Ocean City Board of Education to approve the district calendar for the coming school year and reviewed an updated schedule that adjusts for recent emergency closings.

"I'm asking the board to approve our district calendar, for next year," Doctor Angelo said during superintendent’s comments. He told trustees that because Labor Day falls early this year, the district plans to start staff and students after Labor Day (Labor Day, Sept. 1), with staff returning the Tuesday and Wednesday after Labor Day and students beginning on Thursday. Board materials and comments also reflected a revised graduation date: high school graduation is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, followed by a staff professional day on June 19 and a closure on June 20.

Doctor Angelo also reported follow-up work on the district’s approach to generative artificial intelligence. He said district administrators met with about 15 high school students to discuss how the schools are using generative AI and are developing procedures and expectations tied to academic integrity and distinguishing permissible use from plagiarism. The superintendent said another student meeting is planned in two weeks to refine those procedures.

The calendar and AI-procedure work were presented for the board’s consideration as part of the superintendent report; district staff will bring formal calendar approval paperwork and any related policy language forward for formal board action in the meeting’s consent or business agenda where required.
