Planning commission asks county for $2,500 education line in FY25–26 budget

At its February meeting the Smyth County Planning Commission discussed restoring a training/education line to its FY25–26 budget and approved a motion to request $2,500 from the county for commissioner education.
Commission staff and members described past practice of funding training, including the Certified Planning Commissioners program (a multi-session program the presenter estimated previously cost about $900 per person). The commission noted there is no current education line in the budget. Participants reviewed current budget line items: mileage appropriation of $600 and member payments appropriation of $4,200 from the previous year; the commission reported those lines have generally been under budget.
After discussion about delivery modes (in-person versus online) and staggering attendance across years to manage costs, a member moved to amend the motion to ask the county for $2,500 for education; that amendment was seconded and approved. Commissioners directed staff to gather cost estimates for available training and to prepare a request to the board for the specified amount.
Ending Staff will compile training options and estimated costs and present the information to the commission so it can finalize a request to the Board of Supervisors for inclusion in the FY25–26 county budget.
