Resident invites Galveston County officials to Juneteenth parades and events marking 160th anniversary

Sam Samuel Collins III, a Galveston County resident and community member, used the public-comment period at the May 12, 2025 Commissioners' Court meeting to invite county officials and Judge Henry to local Juneteenth events marking the 160th anniversary of the June 19, 1865 announcement of freedom for enslaved people in Texas.
"Juneteenth is an event that occurred in this city in 1865 that has now become a national holiday and a worldwide celebration of freedom," Collins told the court. He said he brought parade-registration forms and a visitors bureau magazine for each commissioner and encouraged them to attend local parades and events.
Collins noted coordinated Juneteenth parades in Hitchcock, Texas City and Galveston, and said Hitchcock's parade is scheduled for June 7; he also mentioned a gospel concert on June 8 and the anniversary date of June 19. He said Juneteenth provides an occasion to discuss other emancipation days and to celebrate the evolution of the country.
An unidentified meeting official thanked Collins for the outreach and for his work with the historical commission. Collins identified himself in his remarks as a seventh-generation Texan with family roots in Brazoria County and invited commissioners to participate in parade events and associated programming.
