Commissioners approve specs to solicit bids for Bushland Road overlay project

County engineering staff described the scope as an overlay from Hollywood north to near State Highway 40 (with a small portion in neighboring Potter County). "There's approximately 8,900 tons of overlay to be included ... we do have to have the court's approval to move forward," the presenter said. Bids will be released May 15 and proposals are due June 3; legal notices will run in the Amarillo Globe‑News and on the county website.
Why it matters: The overlay is one of the county’s first funded road construction projects under recently approved road funding and aims to improve a major local arterial. Staff said splitting the project so Potter County could choose to participate maintains surface continuity while allowing separate awards if the neighboring county declines.
Commissioners asked about coordination with Potter County; staff said the county will offer Potter County the option to join and that combined procurement can reduce unit costs. The court approved the specifications by unanimous vote.
Next steps: The county will solicit bids and report back to the court with proposals and an award recommendation after the June 3 deadline.
