District forms AI committee; board reviews bilingual terminology and petty cash policy changes

The Ridgefield Park Board of Education approved policy items and heard that the district is forming a committee to study artificial intelligence use in schools.
Trustee Orth reported the policy committee met April 15 and said "the district is forming an AI committee, with principals recommending teachers, staff, students, and parents for participation" and that the committee aims to begin discussions in May. The board moved and passed policy and regulation motions 10‑01 and 10‑02 by roll call.
Orth also said the committee reviewed policy 24‑15 (first reading) with no major changes and recommended terminology updates in policy 24‑23: references to "ELLs" will be changed to "MLs" (multilingual learners) to align with current district usage. The committee flagged concerns about scheduling for required high‑intensity instruction and standardized‑testing impacts on multilingual learners and referred that issue to the Faculty and Programs committee for further review.
Trustee Velez, reporting for Faculty and Programs, said the parent/guardian learning academy on social media is scheduled for May 6 and is funded through Title I. Velez reported that pre‑K registration closes May 1 and that "we have 60 percent of our seniors that have completed the FAFSA," adding the district hopes for substantially higher completion before graduation.
The policy committee also noted a second reading of the petty‑cash policy to increase flexibility, particularly to support CTE programs. Trustees approved the policy motions with no recorded objections.
