Rockaway Township schools report music education honors, kindergarten turnout and spring events

The Rockaway Township School District reported several districtwide updates at the board meeting, including a six-year recognition for music education, incoming kindergarten turnout and a weekend community wellness fair.
Superintendent Dr. Richard Corbett told the board the district has been named one of the Best Communities for Music Education for the sixth consecutive year and credited the district’s music faculty. Corbett also announced that kindergarten orientation at Stony Brook Elementary School welcomed more than 80 parents and that staff shared key summer and orientation dates for incoming families.
Corbett outlined testing and events across schools: NJSLA testing for grades in the district was underway; Birchwood students participated in a PTA walkathon, Dwyer celebrated staff appreciation and received a working electric sign at the school’s entrance; Stony Brook completed No Place for Hate activities and earned a gold star designation; and Copeland Middle School has several end-of-year events, including an eighth-grade trip, awards night, formal and graduation on June 18.
Business Administrator Megan Slam told the board the district is opening the new financial year, replacing some lunch tables and completing spring grounds projects. She highlighted expenditures on the bills list presented to the board: approximately $50,630 for utilities; $124,834 for tuition; $34,099 for custodial and maintenance; $231,448 for security; $161,489 for transportation contracts and repairs; and two payrolls totaling $3,668,900.96. Slam said the live stream experienced a technical error at the start of the meeting but that the full recording would be available after the meeting.
In board actions during the meeting the board approved a memorandum of agreement with the Rockaway Township Education Association bus drivers’ unit for July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2028; the agreement was added to administration items and placed on the public record with a copy available for inspection.
