Resident urges Newton County to close or mark short, narrowing stretch of county road

Jessie Leach, a Newton County resident, told the county during the April 22 public hearing that a short stretch of a county road near his house has narrowed and been poorly maintained, and he asked the commissioners to remove the road from maintenance or place a dead-end sign by a nearby substation.
"It's basically probably 300 yards the whole length of the road," Leach said, adding that the narrow section is closer to "maybe a 100 yards." He described the roadway as narrowing near a small house and said people have difficulty turning around; he asked the county to prevent removal of the good portion of the county road and to consider signage to stop traffic at the substation.
The resident said the route runs from a point near Buchanan toward Lakewood and past where his father's house stood. Leach told the court the property adjoining the roadway is privately owned and that drivers sometimes use the narrow section to turn around.
The presiding official told Leach that the court could not make a motion during the public hearing but that the matter had been brought to the court's attention and could be placed on a later agenda for formal consideration. After Leach finished, the presiding official thanked him and closed the public comment on that item.
No formal action, motion or vote on the road was recorded in the meeting transcript; the item will be considered later by the court if placed on a future agenda.
