Committee passes bill authorizing specialty license plates for University of Hawaii Cancer Center

The House Committee on Higher Education voted to pass HB 531 HD1, a bill authorizing issuance of special license plates to recognize the University of Hawaii Cancer Center and provide a fundraising mechanism and public visibility for the center.
Dr. Ueno (University of Hawaii Cancer Center) testified the license plate would provide visibility and fundraising support; he estimated proceeds would likely raise on the order of $100,000. Cynthia Au of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network supported the plate as a visibility and fundraising tool and noted the Cancer Center’s designation as the only National Cancer Institute‑designated center in the Pacific.
The committee passed the bill as is; the bill has a defective date and no appropriation was attached in committee action.
