At the April 22 meeting, councilmembers raised a community request that the city remove playground equipment at Nesbitt-Newton Park because residents and neighborhood attendees described it as unsafe and badly deteriorated.
A councilmember reported that roughly 15 residents attended a neighborhood meeting urging removal. Public-works staff told the council the department could remove the equipment within a month, but cautioned that removal would leave an empty area unless a funded replacement is ready. Staff said the site is slated for renovation next year as part of a grant-funded project and expressed concern that removal prior to construction could leave the neighborhood without facilities for an extended period.
Councilmembers said staff should canvass a majority of neighbors before removing equipment and coordinate with the upcoming renovation timetable. One councilmember noted past community reactions when picnic tables were removed several years ago and urged careful outreach before final action.
No formal council vote was taken. Staff agreed to attend a neighborhood meeting and to coordinate next steps based on resident input and the project schedule.
