Commission awards roof-replacement contracts for sheriff’s office and annex extension

County staff member Matt Haught opened the bid results. Three contractors attended the mandatory pre-bid meeting: Panels Roofing (Augusta), Blackstone Roofing (Berkeley County) and Hite Roofing (Cumberland). Two bids were submitted by the bid deadline; one covered only the old jail/extension building and one covered the sheriff’s office roof.
Haught said the Panels Roofing bid to replace the extension/old jail membrane roof and related work came in at $12,805. He reported that Blackstone Roofing submitted a $56,000 proposal to remove the existing membrane roof and re-deck with new insulation and materials for the sheriff’s department building. Assistant Hodge recommended timely work to avoid further water damage to the sheriff’s office; commissioners agreed the bids appeared reasonable.
Commissioner Bridal moved to accept Panels Roofing’s $12,805 proposal for the extension/old jail building; President Eglenger seconded and the motion passed by voice vote. The commission then voted to accept Blackstone Roofing LLC’s $56,000 proposal for the sheriff’s office roof; the motion passed.
Why it matters: Fixing compromised roofs protects county property and prevents further interior damage to county offices and public-safety functions.
