Gastonia City Council closed a public hearing and unanimously approved a resolution authorizing an economic development agreement for Project Peacock on April 1.
Project Peacock, proposed for the Gaston Commerce Center at 1245 Shannon Bradley Road, plans a $2,000,000 investment in a 70,000-square-foot facility and the creation of 25 jobs, city staff told the council. The company manufactures display racking used in grocery stores and pharmacies. City staff said Peacock would be a water-and-sewer customer of the city, not a Gastonia Electric customer.
City staff and the Gaston County Economic Development Commission described the incentive as a standard Level 1 grant that reimburses a portion of taxes over five years. City staff said machinery and equipment for the project would be taxed and that the machinery-and-equipment value reported in the project memo is $1,600,000.
Council members asked about the type of jobs and salary levels; staff described them as average county wage positions and cited an approximate county average wage of about $50,000. The council confirmed coordination with county inspections and the EDC to ensure building code and fire-code requirements are met.
The council voted to close the public hearing and “accept as presented.” The motion passed unanimously.
