The Kirkwood City Council approved Resolution 5 20 25, accepting a bid from Traffic Logics Corporation for $59,815 to purchase 22 speed feedback signs under a Sourcewell cooperative contract.
City staff described the signs as capable of detecting vehicles in up to two lanes of traffic at multi-lane locations. In response to a council question about placement on four-lane roads such as Kirkwood Road, staff said the signs can be configured to cover two lanes in either direction and will typically register the higher of two vehicle speeds when two vehicles pass simultaneously.
The purchase was described as a traffic-calming measure intended to encourage slower driving on local streets and to supplement other enforcement or engineering efforts. Council members expressed optimism the signs would influence driver behavior based on experience with similar devices.
Action and vote: Resolution 5 20 25 passed by roll call with all present council members voting yes.
Quote: When asked about two-lane detection, staff said, “It’s gonna pick up probably the closest one to it. If you… it’s gonna pick up the higher speed of the two.”
Next steps: Staff will process the purchase order and schedule installation of the signs in locations determined by traffic analysis and enforcement priorities.
