Committees flag recurring facility failures, government-relations team seeks state funds for ADA playground

Finance and facilities committee members told the full board they continue to see failures and repair needs across schools: boiler issues and water-valve shutoffs at the high school, pipe failures and a holding tank issue at Bear Tavern, sewer problems at multiple schools, intermittent roof and gym leaks and fire-alarm and lighting concerns. Committee members said in-house maintenance and cooperative purchasing reduce costs but do not eliminate the need for capital work.
Separately, the government-relations committee reported submitting an FY26 budget request to the 15th legislative district seeking $125,000 toward a $250,000 replacement for the Bear Tavern playground, which the committee said is not ADA compliant because of its wood-fiber surfacing and lack of ground-level activities. The committee said it had received a receptive response from at least one assembly member's office but cautioned the state budget is tight.
Committee chairs said ongoing litigation among municipalities and increasing facilities needs were motivating factors for moving forward with a referendum and continued outreach to local and county officials. The committee also described plans to meet with Mercer County executive Dan Benson to discuss countywide initiatives aimed at integration and cross-district collaboration.
