Board advances policy revisions including new generative AI policy and updated surveillance and discipline rules

The Dover Public School District Board of Education moved forward on a package of policy revisions on first reading.
Policy committee chair Miss Pinellas reported several updates presented for first reading: Policy 9320 (cooperation with law enforcement agencies) was revised; Policy 7441 (electronic surveillance in school buildings and on school grounds) was updated to allow memoranda of understanding with local law enforcement for activating surveillance equipment during emergencies; Policy 5710 (student grievance) and Policy 5533 (student smoking) were revised; and Policy 5411 (graduation requirements) was revised to reflect a 120-credit graduation requirement and to reference FAFSA completion with a waiver option.
The board also reviewed a new district policy (Policy 2365 / 2365-equivalent in materials) on acceptable use of generative artificial intelligence, which outlines definitions of AI tools, expectations for student work, and the requirement that the district adopt an AI plan with details on permitted uses and oversight. Miss Pinellas said the district plan would be reviewed and revised as needed.
Committee members discussed aligning visitor, communications-device and privacy policies with updated language about parents and guardians; members noted some job descriptions were updated to reflect reporting to the superintendent rather than the assistant superintendent. Miss Pinellas said the policy committee will continue work on regulations that accompany these policy changes.
The board approved the policy items presented for action (items 1–3) on the consent calendar for first reading.
