Hopewell Valley advances postnatal-accommodation policies for staff and students to first reading

The Hopewell Valley Regional Board of Education's policy committee presented three new policies for first reading April 23 that would provide postnatal accommodations for support staff, teaching staff and students returning to school after the birth of a child.

The board approved moving the policies to first reading without substantive opposition. The policies describe reasonable break times and a private, non-bathroom space for expressing milk; allow expressed milk to be stored in school refrigerators or personal coolers; and require coordination with supervisors or school nurses.

Policy committee members said they removed proposed language limiting accommodations to one year after the child's birth and replaced it with language providing accommodations "for as long as the staff member requires them," aligning district policy with American Academy of Pediatrics guidance, according to the committee report.

Policy 24-16.O1 (postnatal accommodations for students) goes further by explicitly permitting breastfeeding on campus and cites federal regulation requiring a lactation space that is "clean, shielded from view, free from intrusion" and not a bathroom. The committee recommended retaining language allowing breastfeeding as needed and clarified the student's obligation to coordinate with the school nurse and principal so that academic make-up work can be arranged.

Because these policies are at first reading, no final board adoption occurred; they will return for subsequent consideration and possible adoption at a later meeting.
