Cedar Springs Public Schools' Board approved a suite of summer 2025 bond-funded construction projects, including parking and traffic-flow improvements at Cedar View Elementary, new parking and regrading at the high school, and replacement and enhancement of tennis courts.
District staff said the public bid opening and interviews were performed with consultant Triangle Construction. The total project scope originally budgeted at about $3.69 million came in at roughly $3.24 million, significantly under the consultant's projection. The board received a vendor-by-vendor recommendation for concrete, masonry, general trades, electrical, earthwork, paving and tennis-court surfacing.
Key elements
- Cedar View Elementary: additional parking rows and a secondary entrance/drive to improve drop-off/pick-up flow and support after-hours visitor parking for sports events. Staff said the added parking will also help cross-country event parking and spectator access. - High school: relocation of student parking closer to the building, creation of a berm and visual/sound buffer adjacent to neighboring properties, and shifting parking away from fence lines around tennis courts to increase spectator safety. - Tennis courts: redesign into four quadrants with spectator seating, shade structures, and post-tension surfacing for durability; the racket/tennis surfacing vendor was sole-sourced due to market specialization.
Procurement and schedule
Staff said Dean's Excavating (recommended for earthwork/utilities) could begin early site mobilization; starting this year would let the contractor reuse on-site material and reduce their bid price. Installation work is planned for the summer so that construction will be complete before the 2025-26 school year.
Board action and votes
A motion to accept the bid recommendations and award contracts as proposed passed by roll call. Staff said the lower-than-expected bid totals free capacity in the bond budget for other projects in the program and that the district will go back to bid for final repaving and some remaining site work next year.
