Board hears bond-project progress at East Carter, West Carter and Croatan high schools

Board members received a slide-driven bond project update at the May 6 Carteret County Board of Education meeting outlining work at East Carteret, West Carteret and Croatan-area schools.
"East Carter's culinary classroom is a little different ... this project is well underway. It should be completed by the summer in time for next semester for, East Carteret," the presenter said while showing photographs of the culinary lab and hood installation. The presenter noted additional exterior work where former windows were replaced with cement board and new HVAC ductwork and roof penetrations for hoods.
At West Carteret, the presentation included a nearly completed van road and new storage shelving pending installation; a new restroom added to the vocational corridor to avoid long walks past the gym; a demo of concrete risers in the old band room being converted to a choir/chorus space; an upgraded culinary lab with epoxy flooring and equipment arriving; a new science wing with four classrooms; and a large JROTC room equipped with a divider curtain to split the space for multiple uses. Photographs also showed a mezzanine for mechanical equipment, upgraded gym restrooms, a new laundry room for athletic uniforms and a reconfigured, single large cafeteria area.
The presenter said modernizing electrical and HVAC systems was a major, less visible benefit of the bond work: "Not only things that you can see, but all the electrical work done behind the scenes that gets it up to code ... it's a game changer for West Carter." Board comments in the meeting record supported the view that the improvements address longstanding infrastructure needs.
No contract awards, change orders, or new bond authorizations were recorded during the May 6 presentation in the meeting transcript. The update was informational; the meeting then moved on to superintendent remarks and other agenda items.
Why this matters: bond-funded construction affects school capacity, safety, and program space — including vocational and culinary labs, science classrooms and JROTC facilities — and can change where students receive instruction and how the district maintains facilities.
