The Irvine City Council voted 6-0 on March 25 to authorize up to $250,000 of FY23-25 general fund savings to support a July 4 celebration at the Orange County Great Park.
Staff presented an event concept that includes a family parade along the Great Park promenade, live entertainment at Hangar 244, food trucks, children’s activities and an evening conclusion with either an aerial fireworks show, a drone light show, or both. A fireworks-only event was estimated at about $200,000; adding a drone show could bring the estimate closer to $250,000. Council directed staff to pursue corporate and community sponsorships to offset costs.
Public commenters largely supported a citywide Independence Day celebration. The finance commission chair urged budgeting the event through the normal budget process and recommended postponing to next year to build sponsorship revenue, while other speakers said the event should proceed this summer. The council approved the staff request and asked staff to engage the Finance and Community Services commissions in planning and to return with details.
