Vice Mayor James Mai moved the request, citing IRS data that Irvine is home to thousands of tax-exempt organizations and saying the week would amplify volunteer recruitment, resource sharing and nonprofit partnerships. Councilmember Liu asked staff to include nonprofits that serve Irvine residents even if their offices are outside the city.
Staff did not present a final program; the council’s vote sends the matter to the city manager’s office to develop a plan, which may include workshops, an expo and volunteer-matching services. Public commenters representing neighborhood and nonprofit groups backed the idea, saying an organized week would make it easier for residents to learn how to help and for small nonprofits to find volunteers and funding.
The council’s action is a directive to staff rather than an appropriation; staff will return with details, including proposed dates, venues and operating partners for council review.
