The City Council approved a consent-item contract to host a Visit Huntington Beach visitor kiosk following a brief staff report and questions about signage and interactivity. The consent calendar motion passed by roll call vote, 7-0.
Councilmembers asked whether adjacent signage or digital wayfinding would be included in the contract, and staff clarified that the freestanding kiosk is for public-service announcements and is not authorized for advertising revenue under the current code. Jennifer Villasenor (staff) said the kiosk operator’s materials were limited to promoting public events and that an adjacent wayfinding device is separate and would require its own permit; she added the city is evaluating the cost of replacing the current noninteractive wayfinding display with a weather-resistant touchscreen.
The consent item passed on a roll call that recorded affirmative votes by Councilmembers Twiney, Kennedy, McKeon, Mayor Pat Burns, Vandermark, Strickland and Williams. Council asked staff to return with any needed signage-permit guidance and to evaluate whether a code amendment would be necessary for off-site advertising if the council wanted that option in certain locations.
No controversy was recorded on the kiosk contract; discussion centered on permitting, zoning code limitations and possible future upgrades to touchscreen interactivity.
