The Board of Education on May 8 approved a proposal to create the Jonathan W. Parent "You're the Best Around" Scholarship, a $1,000 annual award to a graduating senior selected for exceptional character and perseverance.

Administrators said the scholarship is named for Jonathan Parent and that his wife works for the district. The award criteria call for a recipient who demonstrates strong character and resilience; preference will be given to a minority student and special consideration may be provided if the student is enrolled in the EMCC program. A staff selection committee will review applications and select the recipient. The donor will hold funds and issue the scholarship as an annual check to the chosen student.

Board members approved the proposal 5–0.
