Rep. Mahamud presented House File 19‑26 asking for a one‑time $1 million appropriation to the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches (GMCC) to sustain operations of the Minnesota Food Share March campaign, which GMCC runs for participating food shelves statewide.
Adrienne Dorn, president and executive director of GMCC, said the March campaign supports about 285 food shelves and historically returned 100% of funds raised to participating shelves using a proportional formula. "Based on our survey data, 91% of food shelves we work with say these funds are vital to their operations," Dorn told the committee. She said changing fundraising patterns had left the campaign vulnerable and that state support would help reengage sponsors and stabilize the campaign.
Christopher Anderson, executive director of Western Communities Action Network (WE CAN), said the campaign accounted for one‑third of donated food to his mobile market in recent years and that his agency’s need has increased by roughly 25% annually over five years.
The committee moved to lay House File 19‑26 over for possible inclusion in the omnibus bill.
