The House Committee on Culture, Arts & International Affairs voted to advance HR 135 and HCR 141 with an amendment to add the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) and a member of the Hawaii State LGBTQ+ Commission to the proposed working group studying the feasibility of creating a Hawaii cultural trust.
Karen Ewald, executive director of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, testified via Zoom and said, "we stand in strong support." Daniel Naho'opee, interim president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, offered written comments and said the measure aligns with HTA mandates "to ensure that Hawaiian culture practitioners and cultural sites receive the necessary support, nurturing, and engagement to sustain our visitor industry." Michael Goloju Jr., vice chair of the Hawaii State LGBTQ+ Commission, testified that the commission is "in strong support" but asked explicitly for a seat at the table to ensure queer history and stories are included in the work.
During decision-making the committee recorded that it would add HTA and a member of the LGBTQIA+ commission to ensure representation; the amendment was adopted and the committee forwarded the measures with its recommendation.
