Mineola Board approves BOCES votes, BOCES budget, wellness policy, middle-school environmental finding and staff appointment

The Mineola Union Free School District Board of Education on Monday took a series of votes covering BOCES representation, a BOCES administrative budget, a revised wellness policy, environmental findings for middle-school renovations and a staff appointment.
The board selected three nominees to receive the district's single vote for the Nassau Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) election. The board nominated Ronald Ellerby of Freeport, Fran Langsner of Levittown and Robert Schoen of Baldwin, and approved casting one vote for up to three candidates to fill three-year terms beginning July 1, 2025. The board voted to approve the nominations and "Resolution 64 passes," the transcript records.
Resolution 65 approved the Nassau BOCES proposed administrative operations budget for 2025–26. Board members said Mineola participates in BOCES programs for career and technical education, itinerant hearing and vision services, regional summer school and special education; the presentation enumerated nine CTE students, seven itinerant hearing/vision, 85 regional summer-school spots and 12 special-education students currently served through BOCES.
Resolution 66 waived a second formal reading and adopted revised Policy 5661 on wellness to conform with state regulations; the board recorded the vote as passed.
Resolution 67 adopted a negative declaration under the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SECRA) and authorized execution of Part 3 of the Environmental Assessment Form for proposed renovations at Mineola Middle School. The resolution identifies three project groups at the middle school: replacing the auditorium roof and addressing the skylight and vents; converting an existing baseball field to synthetic turf with dugouts, lighting and related site work; and repairing retaining walls, concrete and fencing near the art-room entries. The board also ratified resolution 54 (adopted March 20, 2025) authorizing placing a proposition before district voters to fund these projects from the Mineola 2020–22 capital reserve fund.
Resolution 68 approved the meeting's consensus agenda (items J1A1 through J4B1) as presented.
Resolution 69 was a walk-on appointment: the board approved the appointment of Kimberly Thury as a 0.6 lead replacement English teacher retroactive to April 22, 2025; the board recorded the motion and vote and the resolution passed.
