GUILDERLAND, N.Y. — The Guilderland Board of Education on Jan. 14 approved a slate of routine and fiscal items and split 6-2 to increase certain property tax exemptions for low-income seniors and people with disabilities.
At the start of the meeting the board unanimously (8-0) approved the consent agenda and later unanimously approved personnel actions, which included recognition of the retirement of Pine Bush principal Chris Sanita. The board also unanimously approved two service agreements (evaluation services addendum with Achievements and a shared transportation agreement with New Lebanon Central School District), professional services for a choral accompanist, a scholarship from the Westmere Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, two budget transfers for special-education BOCES services, a nonbinding application to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Clean School Bus rebate program, several donations, and two co-curricular club additions for middle- and high-school students.

Board members who cast the two opposing votes on the exemption items said they were concerned about shifting tax burden to other property owners. Board members voting in favor cited the benefit to eligible seniors and disabled residents; administrators noted residents must apply by March 1 for this tax year. The district business office said the immediate fiscal effect would be small per typical-property estimates but that exact impact depends on application volume.
The votes clear the way for the district to continue drafting next year’s budget and finalize capital project planning ahead of public outreach and the March budget presentation.
