Homer FFA students advance after district contests; Abby Aldrich to compete at state level

Three students from Homer’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) program described recent district and substate contests and one student said she will advance to the state competition in May.
Allison Sharp, junior-high FFA advisor, and Mrs. Schneider introduced the students and thanked them for representing Homer at district competitions. Abby Aldrich said she drew a topic about “the importance of markets in urban areas” for extemporaneous speaking and won her district competition; she will compete at the state level in May. Oliver, who competed in extemporaneous speaking, described the 30-minute preparation and five-minute speech format and said he improved his public-speaking confidence across rounds. Marcus, an eighth grader, described his first-year experience in a “people in agriculture” presentation and advancing to substates.
Board members praised the students’ public-speaking skills and presentation confidence. The board presented certificates of achievement and thanked the students for their work competing and preparing in after-school and ninth-period practices.
Students and advisors said the FFA program provides leadership training and career exposure in agriculture, and several board members urged continued community support of the program.
