Superintendent Dr. Moyer told trustees March 6 that the district will begin a comprehensive community engagement process in fall 2025 and invited residents to apply to serve on a 20-member facilitating team that will guide the work.
"A key to this effort is the formation of a facilitating team consisting of approximately 20 community members," Dr. Moyer said, adding that the district has posted a webpage with information and a sign-up link. The district will bring a draft charge statement to the Communications Committee March 18 and to the full board March 27 for formal approval.
Moyer also noted several district news items: the district's feature in the February Business View Magazine, student and staff recognitions including a Northport High School student award, and kindness and career events at East Northport Middle School. She asked the board to make community communications clear and repeated the need to explain district items in outgoing voter materials.
On a separate matter, Dr. Moyer clarified a question about a ballot item: after the Northport Historical Society changed its charter and became the Northport Historical Society and Museum it qualified under state law to place a proposition on the school district ballot. "Because of that status, it has the right to place ballot questions, or, propositions, on the school district ballot," Moyer said, adding that the board has no authority to block or alter that process; the proposition will appear as a standalone item on the district ballot.
The superintendent also urged residents to apply to the facilitating team and said the district will aim for a broad, representative cross section: different age groups, neighborhoods and community roles. Administrators said selection will be done by district leadership in consultation with consultants and the Communications Committee after the board approves a charge statement.
No board action was taken March 6 on the community engagement structure; administrators said the draft charge and related materials will be part of the March 27 packet.
