Board member Michael (board member) reported to the school board on May 8 that the district's community engagement facilitating team held its first meeting April 24 and will guide a broader community-driven strategic planning process this fall.
Michael said the initial facilitating group included parents, business owners, teachers, principals and non-parents from across Northport and East Northport; about 21 people attended the first meeting. Staff contractor Discovery Works led a short workshop to clarify the team's charge: to make recommendations to the board for long-term goals and priorities that improve learning experiences and environments in a fiscally responsive way.
Nut graf: The facilitating team is intended to collect diverse community input ahead of a larger set of public engagement sessions planned for the fall; district leaders said the team will not direct outcomes but will help ensure the outreach process is inclusive, fair and representative.
What happened at the first meetings Participants worked in small groups to identify the top information the community needs to know to inform decisions. The district has opened a community survey (a direct-mail postcard with QR code is being distributed) and plans larger community meetings in the fall; staff said the first larger community session is likely in early October, with extensive outreach (flyers, direct mail, school communications and door-to-door efforts by subcommittees) planned to boost participation.
Board member Dave (board member) said the board's outreach target is roughly 200 attendees for the larger meetings and that the facilitating team will include marketing and subcommittees to support outreach, branding and local invitations. The district will mail a postcard to all residents, place flyers in community locations and contact PTAs to circulate the survey QR code.
Discussion versus role Board members and staff repeatedly emphasized that the facilitating team's role is to "facilitate the process" and not to pre-determine policy. Michael said the group's job is to ensure community voices shape the product that will be presented to the board for future decisions.
Next steps The facilitating team will meet again this spring; staff expect to finalize facilitator commitments and then pause over the summer before launching larger public sessions in the fall. The district will publicize dates and materials as plans firm up.
