St. Louis County animal shelter reopens after quarantine; pilot foster program to expand to public

St. Louis County Executive told the council on May 20 that the county’s Animal Care and Control Adoption Center reopened after a quarantine and contamination-disinfection period and that no new parvovirus cases had been detected since May 1.
The executive said veterinary and shelter staff evaluated, vaccinated, treated and monitored animals during the closure and performed “extensive contamination efforts” to disinfect the facility. “Thanks to these swift and thorough actions, no new cases of parvo virus have occurred since May 1,” the County Executive said.
During the shelter closure, staff launched a pilot foster program that began with shelter staff and has expanded to include volunteers; county officials plan to open the program to the public soon to increase temporary homes for animals awaiting adoption. The County Executive said shelter staff completed “fear-free” training designed to improve animals’ experiences by teaching employees and volunteers about animals’ emotional needs; the executive said Dr. Cunningham would present further details at a committee meeting next week.
