St. Louis County announces animal shelter reopening, parvo containment and pilot foster program

St. Louis County Executive told the council that the county’s Animal Care and Control Adoption Center reopened after quarantine, veterinary care and a contamination cleanup following a parvovirus outbreak.
The executive said, "thanks to these swift and thorough actions, no new cases of parvo virus have occurred since May 1." He said veterinary and shelter staff evaluated, vaccinated, treated and monitored affected animals and undertook extensive disinfection.
During the shelter’s closure the county ran a pilot foster program that began with shelter staff and has expanded to volunteers; officials said they plan to open the program to the public soon to increase temporary homes for animals awaiting adoption. The executive added that the shelter is a certified "fear free" facility and that staff and volunteers have completed training intended to better meet animals’ emotional needs.
The County Executive said Dr. Cunningham will present more details at the council’s committee of the whole next week, including new hires and training and how council members can support getting animals into homes.
