Jefferson County to publish master plan Feb. 18; public open houses set for March

The Jefferson County Council heard an update on the county's long-awaited master plan and was told the draft will be published to the public on Feb. 18, followed by two open houses in March.
Councilwoman Susan Arons, who represents District 3 and has pressed for the plan since 2022, urged residents to review the draft and attend local meetings. "Please, please, please tell your friends and neighbors, let them know that there will be 2 open houses where the public can give their opinions on the master plan," Arons said.
The county's County Executive said the plan would be distributed to the advisory panel on Feb. 14 and that the advisory panel meeting on Feb. 18 will accompany the online publication. "We're gonna actually publish it on the eighteenth. Once we have the first panel meeting, it will be live at that point," the County Executive said.
Mitch Fair, county services and code enforcement director, summarized the plan's purpose: the document will outline Jefferson County's existing conditions, recommend goals and objectives for development and infrastructure, and include an implementation guide. According to Fair, the plan is intended to serve as the county's official guide for land use, development and natural areas for the next 10 to 20 years.
The council was given the dates and venues for public outreach: two open houses at the Administration Building on March 5 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and March 6 from 10 a.m. to noon. The County Executive and Arons encouraged residents to submit comments online once the draft is posted.
Background: Arons first raised the need for a new master plan at a council meeting on May 23, 2022. The county retained consultant Hauser Levine to develop the plan. The council was also reminded of related upcoming outreach events, including a State of the County breakfast hosted by the Jefferson County Growth Association on Feb. 17 at Northwest High School.
No motion or formal vote on the plan occurred during the meeting; the timeline and public meeting dates were presented for information and outreach.
