Local history group asks county to honor decorated WWII veteran Norris Whitaker

Members of the West Letcher Oral History Society asked Letcher County Fiscal Court on Monday to consider a public recognition for Norris Whitaker, whom the group described as one of the county’s most decorated World War II veterans.
Mary Blair, representing the West Letcher Oral History Society, told the court the group records local histories in Blackwood and is seeking a county-level recognition so visitors can learn about Whitaker’s service. Blair said Whitaker served as a bomber pilot in World War II, was rescued after a plane crash in January 1942, served at Guadalcanal, and received multiple medals, including several Distinguished Flying Cross awards and Silver Stars.
“We would just like for you all to consider honoring him,” Blair said, adding the group would prefer a marker or sign in Whitesburg or another visible location rather than a remote site on Mill Branch.
Court members responded that society members should meet with the judge’s office and the mayor of Whitesburg to discuss options and logistics for any memorial or sign. Judge Adams (title recorded in the meeting as Judge) said staff and the court would follow up, and the society left supporting documents with the clerk.
The request was made during the new-business portion of the meeting and no formal action or funding decision was taken; court members asked for a meeting between society representatives and county officials to develop a plan.
