The committee reviewed updates to the district’s Parent and Family Engagement policy and asked counsel to compare the district regulation and policy with the NISPA sample and return a recommended consolidation.
Committee members noted the district already conducts annual curriculum meetings that review New York State assessment data and said Title I schools hold required annual meetings attended by administrators, parents and community representatives. One committee member described the Title I annual meeting as a forum that reviews Title I fund uses and assessment outcomes and said invitations go out through principals; the meeting for this year was scheduled for May 14.
The group discussed NISPA’s suggestion that districts use an advisory board to review the effectiveness of parent and family engagement efforts. Committee members said the required annual survey and required review are in place; some members expressed interest in an advisory board or committee to provide more granular, building-level engagement and to compare Title I schools against other district schools. Members asked counsel to reconcile language in the policy and regulation and to advise whether language from the sample should be incorporated into policy or left in regulation.
Mara (counsel) and staff will review the proposed changes and return a consolidated draft for committee consideration. No formal committee vote was recorded.
