Committee agrees to synthesize two samples for student board member policy and to keep 9:30 p.m. attendance rule

The Policy & Personnel Committee reviewed two draft samples for a new policy creating an ex officio student member on the Board of Education and directed counsel to synthesize the drafts into a single document for committee review.

Committee Chair Deborah Brooks said she preferred the NISPA sample with select language from the attorney’s draft, including a succinct statement of term length and attendance expectations. Brooks said the committee intends to designate the position for a senior student with a one-year term and an alternate and noted that attendance is expected until 9:30 p.m., consistent with prior full-board direction. “We agreed that it would be 09:30. So I feel responsible to put that in,” Brooks said.

Members discussed logistics and selection. The group confirmed the selection process will be run by Schreiber High School principals and student body procedures rather than a district-run interview process; Brooks said Dr. Baer (Schreiber principal) will facilitate and coordinate selection. Members also noted that students may request remote participation and may be excused early with the board president’s approval; the committee agreed the board officers and superintendent should coordinate orientation and onboarding for the student member.

Brooks asked counsel to produce a consolidated version that keeps the agreed items—one-year term, alternate, remote participation option, and attendance expectation—for the board’s first reading. No formal vote was taken in committee.
