Lorena Jones Davis, chair of the district calendar committee, presented the first read of the proposed 2026-27 Brandywine School District calendar and a minor adjustment to the approved 2025-26 calendar for seniors.
The committee proposal reflects a change in the teacher contract: one negotiated "trade-in" day (down from two). Staff said the district will decide where to allocate that single trade-in day after further committee discussion. Key dates in the draft calendar include a student first day of August 24, Memorial Day on May 31, graduation on June 6 and the last student day on June 8.
Davis told the board the committee will recommend moving a previously scheduled seniors' asynchronous day (currently listed as March 5, 2026, on the 2025-26 calendar) back one day to March 4 to better align testing schedules and staffing needs; she said she will ask the board for approval of that specific change at a future meeting.
The committee also noted a potential impact from House Bill 400, which at the time of the presentation was pending and could move the state's general primary election to April. That change could require the district to revisit a professional development day currently scheduled for September 15.
Davis said the committee prepares calendars two years in advance and that the draft will be returned for formal board approval after additional stakeholder review and finalization of the trade-in day placement. No formal vote on the 2026-27 calendar occurred at the first read.
