Superintendent presents latest district assessment results; district reports upward trajectory since pandemic

Brandywine School District Superintendent Dr. Lisa Lawson presented district summative assessment results from the 2024 testing year at the March board meeting, showing proficiency rates on Smarter Balanced assessments (grades 3'08) and the SAT (grade 11) alongside state comparisons.
Dr. Lawson said the state-mandated summative assessments are one snapshot of student learning and not the only measure. "It is important to note that these assessments are not the sole measure of student learning or knowledge," Lawson said, adding that classroom performance, teacher feedback and formative measures such as MAP also contribute to understanding student progress.
District slides compared Brandywine proficiency (dark blue bars) against statewide figures (light blue). Lawson said the district maintained higher proficiency rates before the pandemic school closures and that the district is now on an "on and upward trajectory" since returning to in-person schooling.
The superintendent reminded the board that proficiency rates differ from growth percentiles previously presented; the district success plan centers on increasing growth percentiles, which the district expects to boost proficiency over time.
Lawson also highlighted Music in Our Schools Month and Theater in Our Schools Month, noting events and concerts planned to recognize student work. The presentation ended with a district "sizzle" video showcasing student activities.
Board members did not take action on the assessment presentation; the report was informational and staff said more detailed growth measures were available in separate MAP data presented previously.
