Brandywine high school students report spirit week, sports wins and upcoming events

Student council leaders from three Brandywine high schools presented updates to the Board of Education highlighting winter activities, recent wins in athletics and upcoming events.
Lola Fenning, student council president at Brandywine High School, said the district held a winter spirit week and that winter sports are active; she noted the swim team "winning their most recent meet." Fenning also highlighted an induction ceremony and a DanceLab concert scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m., and she thanked the district for hosting a FAFSA workshop that helped seniors with college-financial aid questions.
A Mount Pleasant student council representative reported that Mount completed its first schoolwide community-service project: "69 classes pitched in to make 1,077 cards for the New Castle County Hope Center," and the school donated personal-care items. The presenter also noted that Mount recently added a Science Olympiad team (the eighth public high school in the state to do so) and recognized senior IB diploma candidate Khadija Atalaya for committing to the University of Pennsylvania for cognitive science. Mount listed upcoming events including a cookie-decorating activity for 594 students without referrals and a National AVID Demonstration Showcase on Jan. 30 for 30 registered educators.
Concord High School student council president Maggie Halkowski and vice president Ramin Sura described recent community events and student activities, including a holiday-season "breakfast with Santa" and vendor fair, field trips (an Italian class visit to the Penn Museum), health- and nutrition-focused classroom activities and several winter-sports wins. They named Concord swimmers Nora Ellis and Sam Wagner as recipients of a sportsmanship coin for the meet against Brandywine.
Board members did not engage in discussion on the student reports; the presentations were part of the meeting's student-report agenda item.
