Superintendent highlights athletics, arts and community service in March update

Superintendent Dr. Thompson used the March 18 board meeting to highlight recent student and staff achievements across athletics, arts and community service.

Dr. Thompson announced that the boys’ varsity basketball team advanced to the state level for the first time in 39 years and that both boys’ and girls’ teams progressed to sectional or state competition. The district arranged a field trip for the entire high school to attend an arena game beginning at 2 p.m.; the district will cover student tickets and organized supervision, and administrators are coordinating logistics including bus escorts and traffic control. Staff said they were pursuing additional donations to expand ticket access for other students if the team advances further in the playoffs.

The superintendent also praised recent arts programming: a well‑received school musical with notable staging and strong middle‑school and high‑school participation. Dr. Thompson described seniors serving a St. Patrick’s Day luncheon at a local senior center and reported strong community response.

Other operational items mentioned included coordination with the district’s safety coordinator, Ryan Denison, and work with contracted providers to support event management. Dr. Thompson said more planning will continue in April and thanked coaches, staff and community partners for quick organization to allow students to attend competitive and celebratory events.
