Parent tells board district lacks restorative supports after racial incidents at Binghamton High School

At Tuesday's Binghamton City School District board meeting, parent Gigi Marcus said she has been unable to reach school administrators about incidents at Binghamton High School in which her son and other Black students were reportedly called racial slurs and she said she is seeking restorative practices and better administrative responsiveness.
"No one interviewed me. No one said anything," Marcus told the board, describing efforts to contact the high school principal, Mr. Richmond, and to arrange restorative supports for her ninth-grade son. Marcus said her son is in counseling, that the family has filed appeals related to disciplinary incidents, and that other students were reluctant to come forward.
Marcus identified herself as an active former PTA member and Girl Scout leader and criticized what she described as uneven support for students who are not star athletes. She asked the district to clarify what restorative practices are being used at the high school and urged administrators to return her calls.
Board members acknowledged the concern and said staff would follow up; no disciplinary details or formal board actions were recorded in the public portion of the meeting.
