East Middle principal highlights teacher guiding coalition, cites midyear assessment gains

Michael Hollow, principal at East Middle School, presented a school recognition item Tuesday describing how schedule changes implemented this year created time for daily content-based professional learning teams (PLTs) and a teacher-led "guiding coalition." Hollow said the changes enabled teacher leaders to examine authentic student work, reteach standards and produce midyear gains on common formative assessments.
Hollow described the coalition as teacher-led with positional leadership provided by assistant principals and department chairs; he named Jack Estrella as providing positional leadership and listed teachers who are leading the work (Kelsey, Connor Pittman, Christina Samara). He said the coalition meets every Wednesday and that PLTs now meet by content daily because of the schedule change implemented last year.
Hollow presented a graphic showing English common formative assessment (CFA) performance for sixth through eighth grades at the start of the year and again at midyear; he said the percentage of students who met the standard (shown in green on the graphic) increased across the grades after reteaching. Hollow said the school is continuing to expand the work, noting adjustments to next year's schedule to allow sixth, seventh and eighth grade content teams to meet together.
Hollow described the guiding coalition as intentionally teacher-led and said his role is supportive rather than directive; he invited questions from the board at the end of his presentation.
