District technology staff on Tuesday asked the board to approve a Smart Schools application to pay for cabling and backbone work needed to add voice-over-Internet (VoIP) phones at Thomas Jefferson Elementary.
Tim Milner, assistant director at the South Central RIC, and Alexandra Ackerman, administrator for managing technology services at LRIC, told the board the project would cost about $165,000 and that the district has remaining Smart Schools Bond Act funds from the 2014 bond allocation (the presenters said the district's share was "just over $5,200,000").
Milner and Ackerman said prior Smart Schools work in the district included network and wireless upgrades, building security enhancements and classroom interactive panels. This phase focuses on cabling and backbone infrastructure to support VoIP phones; the presenters said the project is ready for submission and will begin once state approval is granted.
Board members asked for timeline details; presenters estimated the installation work would take about four to six weeks once approvals are in hand and cautioned that the approval process itself can take longer.
No formal appropriation or vote on the project was recorded at the meeting; presenters said they would submit the Smart Schools application after board approval.
