Lancaster board appoints Erin Gannon as director of special education

The Lancaster Central School District Board of Education voted to appoint Erin Gannon as the district’s director of special education during its regular meeting. The motion to appoint was made, seconded and approved with the chair announcing “motion carries.”

Board members and administrators told the board that Gannon was the unanimous choice of the interview panel. An endorsing speaker said: “Miss Gannon has worked in the district these past 4 years, and over that time, she’s shown a tremendous commitment to the students, families, teachers, support staff of the Lancaster Central School community.” The speaker added that Gannon “is a strong leader who always puts students as the first priority in her decision making process.”

Gannon responded to the appointment, saying, “I’m so excited for this new opportunity … I have been so lucky to learn from John Armstrong over the past 4 years, and I promise to take the foundation that he’s built here in Lancaster for special education, and continue to build upon it and make us the best we can be.”

The board’s chair solicited the vote after brief remarks; the chair called for those in favor and then said, “Motion carries.” The meeting record does not include a roll-call tally or the names of a mover and seconder for the motion.

The board also thanked John Armstrong, whom Gannon referenced as a mentor, for his prior work in the district. No follow-up direction or additional implementation steps were recorded in the meeting minutes for the new director’s transition.

An executive session followed the regular meeting to discuss the employment of a particular person.
