Carver County proclaims May 2025 Motorcycle Awareness Month and flags new lane-splitting law

The Carver County Board unanimously approved a resolution proclaiming May 2025 as Motorcycle Awareness Month and heard concerns about a new state law allowing lane splitting.
Frank Ernst, a Chanhassen resident representing area motorcyclists, asked the board to read and adopt the resolution and emphasized that the new state law allowing motorcyclists to "lane split and lane filter" will take effect July 1. "Lane splitting will take effect July first of this year," Ernst said. He also told commissioners the law includes a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour for lane filtering.
Ernst said the change will "take many people by surprise" and urged more public education. The board moved and seconded the resolution; the motion passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
Chair Workman and other commissioners thanked riders for attending and urged caution and awareness on local roadways. The resolution encourages drivers and motorcyclists to observe safe operation and highlights rider training, improved licensing efforts and public education as ways to reduce crashes.
