Carver County board approves proclamations honoring dispatchers, corrections staff, nurses and peace officers; routine items pass

Carver County Board of Commissioners on March 18 approved proclamations to recognize National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, National Administrative Professionals Day, National Correctional Officers Week, National Nurses Day and Peace Officer Memorial Day, and completed routine agenda business including adoption of the agenda, approval of minutes and the consent agenda.

Sheriff Jason Cameron presented the proclamations and described the roles of affected staff, saying, "These are the first, first responders." He told the board that modern dispatchers do more than transfer calls: "These folks are trained in providing telephonic instruction, how to perform CPR so that the people who are making the calls can begin the life saving efforts while the units are en route." He added that dispatchers help de-escalate calls before units arrive: "They're able to start the de escalation and help these folks to de escalate situations again before the units respond."

Cameron also outlined the other observances the office was asking the board to recognize: National Administrative Professionals Day (April 23), National Correctional Officers Week (May 4–10), National Nurses Day (May 6) and Peace Officer Memorial Day (May 15) within National Police Week. He described corrections staff and jail nurses as part of an integrated public safety and care system, saying corrections staff "treat[ ] people with respect and dignity" while managing safety and medical needs in custody.

Carver County Attorney Metz (referred to in the meeting as Attorney Metz) described his first‑hand experience working with corrections staff during prosecution of a violent defendant and said the experience strengthened his appreciation for their professionalism: "It really gave me a greater appreciation because it's a very difficult job." Several commissioners commended the sheriff's staff for their work. Commissioner Uterman moved approval of the proclamations and Commissioner Anderson seconded; the board approved the proclamations by voice vote.
