Edison council approves conservation easement to protect pond at 110 Clive Street

The Edison Township Municipal Council voted May 14 to adopt an ordinance authorizing the township to acquire an irrevocable conservation easement over property at 110 Clive Street (Block 557.8 / Block 30B on the tax map).
Neighbors and open-space advocates told the council the easement will protect a glacial pond and the surrounding habitat from future development or neglect. “This conservation easement is a good thing for Edison and a good thing for the neighborhood,” resident Joel Bassoff said. He said the easement should allow the township to rectify neglect and prevent unwanted development around the pond.
Open Space Advisory Committee member Walt Stoschel asked that the council provide the committee a copy of the conservation easement, call out the easement boundaries and place the easement on the township tax maps so the restriction is publicly visible. The council and planning board were thanked in public comment for protecting neighborhood interests; council members said they supported restoring the pond and encouraged wildlife to return.

What’s next: the ordinance was adopted by roll call and the administration will provide easement documents and boundary mapping to the Open Space Advisory Committee and place the easement on township mapping records.
