Jackson County committee removes Ordinance 5967 from agenda, will correct legislative record

The Jackson County Intergovernmental Affairs Committee on an abbreviated meeting decided not to act on Ordinance 5967 and to remove it from the committee agenda, Chair Sean Smith said.
Ordinance 5967 would repeal subsections 7401.2.4 and 7401.2.5 of the Jackson County Code concerning protections against retaliation for complaints and cooperation with complaint investigations, and would amend the county’s discretionary authority to decline a complaint by enacting three replacement subsections related to the same subject.
"But without objection, we won't act on this, and we will take it off the agenda because we kind of already did last week," Sean Smith, chair of the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, said. Smith said the committee intends to correct an earlier statement to the full legislature about the ordinance's procedural status.
Committee members said the measure had been recommended "for perfection" in the committee at a prior meeting. A committee member reminded the group that members should avoid voting to perfect the ordinance if they want the legislature as a whole to retain the ability to amend it, because perfection would bar later changes.
Committee members also said the county councilor's office advised that the legislature as a whole should be informed the ordinance was previously recommended for perfection and that the full legislature might still consider amendments.
No formal roll-call vote on Ordinance 5967 was recorded during this meeting; the chair handled the item by unanimous consent and then adjourned the committee.
The committee did not set a new date for further action on the ordinance during the meeting.
